Renowned artist, Brenda Councill created this work in her New York studio overlooking Union Square in 1989. The work was part of a large collection " Victim of Love" series of mixed metal constructions exhibited in New York from 1987-1991. Circle Gallery of Art debuted this piece. The Circle Gallery was the largest group of Galleries in the country at that time. Jack Gallery hosted a solo show, where this work appeared in 1990. The artist marked this piece NFS and it has remained in the artist's private collection. The period of creativity was marked by emotional upheaval and the artist claims this is the most representative of her long career. Her work is in major corporate and private collections and she continues to create on a large scale today with work in Public Art. "Cross Between" is an important piece laced with the sacred and profane. A struggle the artist captures a seemingly tangible image…a nude torso is revealed beneath a cloak of canvas in a Cross shape. Is the artist displaying the devil lies within? A sacred vow broken? The rich patina on the brass (oxidized) communicates a tarnishing of the soul. The square on the right addresses staying within the box and wilting of copper fabricated roses signal disappointment to come. This is a highly evocative piece which surely captures the expressions of the post feminist-style of art .
