About The Artwork

The painting "Crowds" is an attempt to capture the unity and diversity of human experience, perception within the collective consciousness. Each of these small geometric objects represents eyes. Pairs of eyes, looking at the viewer from different directions. Individuals in the crowd, with unique experiences and perspectives. Looking and seeing differently, but together creating a collective unity. It's an attempt to present the human capacity for coexistence despite individual differences. It's a story about the fading boundaries between the individual and society, between individuality and collective consciousness. The author encourages reflection on how individuals contribute to the greater whole and how they influence our perception of the world as a collective unity. It prompts the viewer to consider their own place in the world and their relationships with others. The composition is intense and full - figures occupy almost the entire available space, reflecting the nature of the crowd, where individuals are close to each other and often merge into one mass. "Crowds" also encourages reflection on our place in society, our individuality in the context of the group, and the boundaries between personal and public, between solitude and being in a community.

Magdalena Nowatkowska, born in 1982, is a graduate of the Institute of Design in Koszalin, with a Master of Arts degree. She has many years of experience as an illustrator, graphic designer, and designer of interiors, fashion, and home accessories. Over the years, through experimentation and observation of the world, she simplifies the complex in her paintings. She works simultaneously in several series, tackling difficult, existential themes by presenting them in a simplified, refined, straightforward painterly form. The first series that emerged at the beginning of the pandemic is titled "Distance". It is a series of paintings about emotions, interpersonal interactions, energy, fear, and reactions to incomprehensible, foreign, contradictory messages and their influence on human behavior. It's a series about people. Graphically simplified, geometric forms seem to interact with each other. They isolate, levitate and colonize in small or larger groups. It's an analysis of interpersonal vibrations in various contexts, spaces, and circumstances. In the “Limits” series, she explores the sense and nonsense of their existence. It is a response to unpredictable phenomena, initiated precisely during the alarming reports of war. It tells the story of what the artist sees, feels, and observes—a study of the relationships between people, what the times of fear, uncertainty, and how much one can endure evoke. It is a record of interactions between them, of what lies somewhere between the world of peace and total chaos. The series is about emotions. About overcoming obstacles. About possibilities and their absence. About strength and powerlessness. About power. About closeness. About relationships. Longing. About boundaries. About the sense and nonsense of their existence. About people, in short. The human figure has been reduced to simple figurative forms, to maximally simplified signs, with an emphasis on the eye as a dominantly, visibly exaggerated element. The third series is "Dimensionless - Geometric Compositions". It is a fluid transition from the "Limits" series to even greater simplifications. Reducing the simple yet still figurative forms from the previous series to abstract geometric arrangements. The series is a study of the potential of minimalism. An artistic comment on what has already been. The "Horizons" series is a series of works inspired by simple frames from life, in public space, architecture and urbanism.
