About The Artwork
Curve is part of a series I am doing that removes the realism from the water but maintains it for the body of the swimmer, exposing the body in a suspended state, skewing the water colours but not the skin tones. I underpaint the canvas with fluorescent colours bring a slightly surreal feel to the tones on top. The flesh tones remain true to the view underwater but I then layer the water with by palette knife to give a more free abstract feel to the movement. I love the mixture of control on the body painting and freedom of the water.

Originally from New Zealand, I have been in the U.K. for 20 years now, after 18 years in London I relocated out to the lush Kent countryside where I paint in a studio at the bottom of the garden with my dog and 6 Music. In my paintings I love the idea of recreating the physical memory of water, sunshine and light. I aim to capture in a single moment the exhilaration, the joy, the solitude or the tranquility of being in the water. I explore all manner of subjects in my work but I find the underlying connection of water seems to reoccur continuously.
