About The Artwork
Deeply inspired by the work of Frida Kahlo representing her self in the bathtub, I was intrigued by the idea of placing my self in the picture plane. This was in the early 2000's so the smart phone technology of selfies still did not exist. In the whole series I was thrilled to used this deeply personal viewpoint and talk about the small rituals each one invents to lighten up our existence in our own most private sanctuary, our home.I was also interested, as in this case, to show the female body in its most fragile moments, tormented by pain and illness. Contrary to the male gaze, she is not here to please us, but reveals her most humane sufferings. She is a living person that aches, and not an object of desire. This work is part of the Cyprus State Gallery of Contemporary Art

Sophia Hadjipapa-Gee, is an artist and academic, living in Cyprus. Sophia is Associate Professor at the European University Cyprus and a board member of the Research laboratory “Cultural Studies and Contemporary Arts”. She is also one of the founding members of the International Motion Festival and has been serving at its board from various positions. Besides painting she has worked on video art, interventions in Public spaces, participatory projects, illustrations of poems, covers of books and has been involved in Public art. Her works have been presented in numerous international festivals and exhibitions. She has served in various professional bodies including sitting on the committees for the Selection of Works and Artists for Biennales and serving as academic expert on the committee for composing the New National Curricula in Art, of the Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture.
