In the painting South Dakota Landscape as Abject, the use of geometry is minimal but is important in referencing home and horizon. A horizon which dominates and weighs down the composition much like the one most Dakotans see when stepping out their front door. A little bit of geometry that represents the hand of man in the suggestion of fields, architecture and an indication of the unknown, the terra incognita of what lies beyond a particularly expansive field of view. The power of Man meets the Hand of God. A horizon line where Materialism and spirit meet. A kind of metaphysical neotopografia, shallow metaphysical space. The artist’s hand is strongly present in this very subjective view of the South Dakota landscape. The ellipses are almost perfect very nearly mechanical in their production, the imperfections however, reveal the hand of the artist/creator indicating the possibility of a bridge from a place we all know and recognize to an unknown country beyond the horizon.

Paul was born in Viborg SD in June of 1967. Growing up on a farm in Southeastern SD has given Paul an intimate understanding of rural life and a unique perspective as an artist. Viewers of his work will not only perceive a sense of place but will also experience the complicated and sometimes contradictory feelings many rural residents experience over their lifetimes. The paintings are colorful, emotionally autobiographical and mirror the artist's feeling of connection to the land. Paul lives in the Black Hills of South Dakota with his wife and daughter. He is adjunct faculty at BHSU and when he is not teaching or painting he can be found playing guitar(sometimes singing) at local restaurants, bars, churches, coffee shops, festivals etc....
