ABOUT THE ARTWORK

"Dakota Landscape" has been accepted into a Pandemic related art show and won't be available for sale until the show come down in June. Sorry for any inconvenience. This painting was inspired by the farmland of the midwest. Much of this country was tall grass prairie not so long ago. Through modern farming practices agri-business has transformed the prairie into a machine designed to efficiently produce cash crops such as corn and soybeans. The surface of this painting was heavily worked leaving behind much texture. The painting is not intended for framing. The sides are as much a part of the work as the front. The sides are especially deep with the intention of projecting the artwork out into the world. The signature can be found on the left side.

Paul was born in Viborg SD in June of 1967. Growing up on a farm in Southeastern SD has given Paul an intimate understanding of rural life and a unique perspective as an artist. Viewers of his work will not only perceive a sense of place but will also experience the complicated and sometimes contradictory feelings many rural residents experience over their lifetimes. The paintings are colorful, emotionally autobiographical and mirror the artist's feeling of connection to the land. Paul lives in the Black Hills of South Dakota with his wife and daughter. He is adjunct faculty at BHSU and when he is not teaching or painting he can be found playing guitar(sometimes singing) at local restaurants, bars, churches, coffee shops, festivals etc....
