Davis Lisboa, “#DepartmentOfEagles5”, 2017, oil on canvas, 15.7 x 15.7 x 1.57 in (40 x 40 x 3.5 cm)
What/who inspired the work?
I was inspired by the Gerhard Richter’s “Adler” (Eagle), 1972, oil on canvas, 70 cm x 50 cm. This painting was selected by Marcel Broodthaers to make part of the show titled “Musée d'Art Moderne, Département des Aigles, Section des Figures: The Eagle from the Oligocene to the Present”, at Städtische Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Düsseldorf, Germany, from May 16th to July 9th, 1972.
What do you hope its viewers will feel/think?
I hope that viewers know that there is a narrative in art history that deals with "the artists who have created their own museums". This discourse is constructed through Marcel Duchamp (Boîte-en-valise, 1936-1941), Robert Filliou (Galerie Légitime, ca. 1962-1963) and Marcel Broodthaers (Musée d'Art Moderne, Départment des Aigles, 1968-1972). To follow this line I founded The Davis Museum (http://www.davismuseum.com), the first and only museum of contemporary art created in a ballot box through Facebook (2009-ongoing). This cultural entity was recognized by the Government of Catalonia, Spain (http://serveisoberts.gencat.cat/equipaments/28545) has several sections and one of them is "The Paintings Section From Davis Museum ". This wing is divided into portraits and still lifes. The portraits are about Marcel Duchamp, Robert Filliou and Marcel Broodthaers, while still lifes are about the Boîte-en-valise (Box in a suitacase), the Galerie légitime (Legitimate gallery) and the Musée d'Art Moderne, Départment des Aigles (Museum of Modern Art, Department of Eagles).
Why did you choose the medium, the frame format and color?
I chose oil on canvas because I am interested in painting not only because of its versatility as a medium but also because of its rich historical repository of images and ideas. Only the best materials have been used: linen fabrics, Blockx essence of turpentine and linseed oil and Old Holland oil paintings. As the Davis Museum is a cube, I chose the frame of the paintings to be square. And since the Davis Museum's brand color is blue and white, I chose to have the same color in the paintings.
