About The Artwork

My process begins by respectfully gathering water and sediment from the shorelines of lakes and rivers. Returning to my studio, I pour the collected materials with acrylic paint over canvas to emulate the natural erosion and flow of the water. I then brush thin layers of resonant color over the dried texture to express the movement, mood and surface reflections that I observe at the shoreline. Every time I dip my paintbrush in collected water, I connect with its source. This connection flows onto the canvas, creating a painting that realizes our relationship with water. This painting is created with collected Lake Superior water and sediment from near Grand Marais, Minnesota. The surface is textured from the poured sediment, and it is fully adhered onto the canvas through the layer of acrylic. This painting is fitted with D-rings and wire for easy hanging. Artist signature painted on the side, with title and additional signature written on back of the canvas.

The heart of my work is connecting with nature. www.anniehejny.com I create abstract, acrylic textured paintings with respectfully collected water and sediment from significant freshwater sources in the Midwest and beyond. My techniques emulate the natural flow and erosion occuring at these shorelines. The physicality of collecting and incorporating such materials is a critical part of how I embody and translate what nature is telling me. Since 2015, I’ve developed an extensive body of work comprising more than 100 pieces held in private collections across 30 states and internationally, as well as public art collections including Target Corporation, Hilton Corporation, Minnesota Vikings Art Collection, Minnesota Museum of American Art and Minnesota Marine Art Museum. Creating commissioned artwork for clients is an important part of my artistic practice. To date, I’ve completed over 70 commissioned projects for private collectors, galleries and public institutions, locally and nationwide, partnering with Valerio Dewalt Train Architects (Chicago), Eaton Fine Art (Austin), University of Minnesota Mill City Clinic (Minneapolis), Art & Field (Chicago), and more. As a full-time professional artist, I’m focused on developing and refining my creative processes, connecting with nature, and sharing my artwork with my community. I’m a Certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide from the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (Los Angeles, CA), and I’m currently enrolled to become a 2023 Minnesota Water Steward from the Freshwater Society (Minneapolis, MN).
