this painting was also inspired by the latest's women movements in Mexico. women have never expressed, shouted and marched so much in Mexico as this past year. There is a growing sense of sisterhood that I had only felt in the US. It is beautiful and painful at the same time. The series of the golden frames is also about this new sisterhood that is sprouting for the first time in this patriarchal country.
Th papaya powers. This is not the first time I paint papayas. I made a series inspired by them. They have the power to make your digestion work like a clock. And you know what artists say? (not for the romantic): a good bowel movement is all you need to do good art.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

These are extraordinary times because of the flight restrictions due to covid-19. we cannot go and visit as we did before. cannot cross the mountains, the deserts and oceans to see you anymore. i am missing you and i dream that i fly, i grew wings with my papaya powers and head off to see you, my little precious girl. The support was made by myself. I glued and primed the mexican cotton canvas into an also mexican MDF. And after the painting was done it was framed in a gorgeous gold frame with some texture by a framer in Oaxaca. The whole idea was to create sacred art, but of course it is pretty pagan. You can pray to these sisters, if you want to travel again. May your travelings be slow and local. This painting is part of the series Migraciones, or Migrations. There are four paintings with the same measurements and they are meant to be hanged together, preferably. Because I have been twice an immigrant, nature, landscape, geography is something I use as metaphor for our true place in this world, (only travelers nothing more) birds with no borders. A grey sky that may soon turn bright blue. I believe my unique style evolves from the painting of life as a collage of metaphors. Therefore, they find themselves in the postmodern tradition of Borges. With a feminist twist. I hope you find endless possibilities when creating your own meaning for this image.

I am interested in experimenting with sincretic images that capture the whole range of religious experiences. I am inspired by the architecture and mural paintings of the Aztecs, Mayan, Zapotecan and other peoples from America and I like to intersect them with the aesthetics brought to America by the Spanish, like virgins, saints and holy beings. I intersect them with a third paradigm which is my personal journey into Indian philosophies and the idea of enlightenment. The result shows where I am now, believing that art is the way, and being an artist is my religion. I am an atheist, after years of searching. I am Mexican, after two migrations. I am a grandmother and that's a priviledge. Please check my IG to see processes, inspiration and things about Oaxaca.
