Oviraptor dinosaur in acrylics on canvas. Oviraptor was a small, feathered dinosaur which lived in Asia in the late Cretaceous period. It grew up to 5 feet in length, and had a distinctive head crest. Oviraptor's name means "egg-thief" and was given because the original fossils were found close to a collection of eggs. Later, the fossils were examined more closely and it became clear that the eggs belonged to oviraptor itself. Far from being an egg thief, oviraptor was likely sitting on its eggs, incubating them when it was killed. In the absence of clear evidence about the colour of the creature's feathers, I have chosen to create this portrait with dark blue plumage and a yellow crest - colouring partially inspired by the modern cassowary, a large flightless bird.
