About The Artwork

I made this piece after a conflict with my mum. Like many other conflicts in the world, the trigger point is trivial, but the root has been there for a long time — boundary. We cannot change people’s mindset or behaviour but can protect ourselves, both physically and mentally, by setting a boundary, making it clear and safeguarding it. Of course, we need to respect others’ boundary too.

Sindy Yeung is an abstract artist in Hong Kong. She has loved art since childhood but was educated in traditional way and never thought she would be able to create her own art. As she grew up and became busy with work, she gradually put aside painting. Sindy had worked in the non-profit sector for more than ten years before she resigned from her job in 2019 to rethink about life. She felt so lost until she picked up the paintbrush again in 2020. This time, she does not follow any rules but her heart and intuition to paint whatever she has a feeling towards. She is surprised to see that she is able to create. She expresses her frustration and confusion through art, and often realizes the faith and hope deep inside her as she painted, thereby re- visiting her soul and her relationship with herself and the world. Her art explores the contrasts of darkness and light, chaos and peace, limitations and breakthrough, dullness and vibrance, negativity and positivity, gain and loss. Sindy’s art is neither limited to nor defined by any particular technique or theme. Her recent works focus on “struggles and existence” --- how we struggle in all sorts of ups and downs in life and how we live with these struggles, including our responses to them, our emotional fluctuations, what we learn from them and what we count on to make it through.
