About The Artwork
Impression Realism Oil on canvas. Although this is a small painting, it still maintains the quality always present in my work. The paintings have three coats of oils which prepare the surface and depth that the final coat brings to life. The enormous amount of time required to finish a painting is the result of years of work with oils, which have the unique quality of being a medium that is translucent. This characteristic is what shows through all the work involved. Technique is important as is motif. The actual painting is visualized first and then the work begins to be as faithful as possible to this vision. The motifs are trying to give an overall impression of certain places through the use of Impression Realism which creates a whole new image. The doorway is in a small village located on a cliff above the Mediterranean. The sea is ever present in a coastal village, as is its atmosphere. The successive doorways hint at our passage through life itself, from the shoreline through detail and then back to the timeless and endless sea.

I began to paint in oils at the age of 10 years old and, after 54 years working, now begin to really feel that something can be achieved. Why did it take so long? Understanding the technique is one thing but motif is another. I call my paintings "Impression Realism" as they all grow out of an initial impression which develops itself into a kind of vision, representing an experience. The motifs find me, call me and demand to be depicted. I have often felt lucky to not have gotten involved in commercial production and so have worked with great freedom and the kind of success which comes from selling without depending on anything else but the actual painting.
