The element of surprise in our dreams is the key element we don't really have control over when our eyes close. This painting is a free association piece with some elements that seem to find themselves in my subconscious when I sleep. Dreams don't need to make sense and neither does painting, as l...

Matt Smiley is a Canadian-born, Los Angeles–based contemporary artist and filmmaker working across neo-expressionism, symbolism, and immersive installation. His practice explores memory, nostalgia, and collective experience through layered imagery, automatic writing, and emotionally charged visual language that merges pop culture iconography with deeper social and psychological narratives. Smiley first gained international recognition as the director of Highway of Tears (2014), a critically acclaimed documentary examining the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls along Highway 16 in northern British Columbia. Narrated by Nathan Fillion, the film premiered at the TIFF Human Rights Watch Film Festival and contributed to a broader national dialogue surrounding the issue. He later directed For Love (2022), narrated by Shania Twain, a documentary exploring Indigenous child welfare in Canada, released on Netflix Canada and Amazon Prime. In parallel with his filmmaking career, Smiley developed a distinctive visual art practice rooted in symbolism, instinctive mark-making, and cultural memory. His early solo exhibition Dreams Fizzle into Space introduced his hand-painted “Smiley Soup Can” series, establishing a visual language that continues to evolve throughout his work. Since then, he has exhibited in Los Angeles, New York, Aspen, and Brooklyn, including presentations at The Other Art Fair presented by Saatchi Art, the Aspen Institute, the Mondrian Los Angeles, and 1 Hotel West Hollywood. His public mural Blocs of Love at The Bloc in Downtown Los Angeles became a widely recognized landmark and helped expand his audience internationally. Smiley has also exhibited alongside artists including Ed Ruscha, James Turrell, and Shepard Fairey. Beyond the studio, Smiley has remained active in philanthropy and cultural advocacy, supporting organizations and initiatives including Human Rights Watch, UNICEF, Race to Erase MS, TreePeople, No Kid Hungry, and the Wearable Art Gala hosted by Tina Knowles. Today, Smiley’s work is held in private collections across North America and Europe. His practice continues to investigate how familiar symbols, media, and emotional memory shape contemporary identity and human connection.
