About The Artwork
I have a long history with this artwork. The canvas has seen many iterations over several years, and the record of its continued transition is tangible in the texture visible through many layers of paint. Truly following my artistic practice of "building up and breaking down", I learned to trust that the painting would demonstrate its final nature eventually. In consideration of process, this work is a symbol of the inevitability of change. A depiction of a city landscape warming up with the departure of the sun at the time of dusk, its subject matter also lends itself to a commentary on transition and change. Cities host large, ever-changing populations of humanity, and much like the old adage of a river, we can never step into the same city again. Yet there is duration in the appearance of the city and its history is present for us to view.

The full spectrum of this encounter begins with what she derives as an artist in the process of creating. The cycle is completed once the audience brings work to its final culmination with the acts of viewing, interacting, and reacting. This contact is fluid through time, and though her works are forged by her hands, they draw on her internalization of the spiritual nature of shared humanity. Maddy believes in the infinite nature of expression and her vocation is to act as conduit between a driving artistic force outside of the self and the people who make up her audience.
