El título de la obra hace referencia a la hipótesis de Shiladitya DasSarma, un importante biólogo molecular profesor en la Universidad de Maryland Baltimore. Esta hipótesis nos habla sobre cómo podría haber sido la tierra hace miles de años, antes de existir ningún microorganismo. Una molécula de pigmento morado llamada 'retinal' habría sido previa a la clorofila.
