ABOUT THE ARTWORK

As an artist, I am interested in exploring the concept of ego dissolution through the merging of figure and landscape in my work. I find inspiration in the intricate and ornate style of Celtic art, particularly the Book of Kells, which features intricately detailed illustrations of figures intertwined with elements of nature. In my art, I strive to create a sense of unity between the human form and the natural world, highlighting the interconnectedness of all beings and the fluidity of identity. Through the merging of figure and landscape, I aim to challenge the ego and its limiting beliefs, encouraging the viewer to consider their own place in the greater whole. The use of vibrant colors and intricate patterns in my work also reflects the rich cultural history and spiritual traditions of Celtic art, which often incorporated symbolism and myth into their artistic expression. By drawing upon these elements in my own work, I hope to evoke a sense of mystery and connection to the timeless wisdom of the past. Ultimately, my goal is to create art that invites the viewer to let go of their ego and experience a sense of oneness with the world around them. Through the merging of figure and landscape, I hope to facilitate a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of all beings and the impermanence of the ego.

I am a welsh artist, based in Cardiff. As a teenager I became interested in tattooing and I went on to complete my tattoo apprenticeship on the east coast of Australia. I was interested in traditional American tattoos due to the bold graphic aesthetic which reminded me of ancient Egyptian art. I went on to study fine art at Cardiff school of art and design. I continued to pursue a link between the tattoo and fine art, exploring many ways the skills and concepts could be transferred over into contemporary painting. This obsession led me down a unique path of discovery where I have intensely experimented with different paints, tools and surfaces. I now make my own paints from natural materials, sometimes foraging for tree resins or even extracting tar from birch bark. I use unconventional methods in my art such as weaving jute twine through the canvas or using a punch needle to create texture. I douse my paintings with petrol and set them on fire to allow them to come to fruition organically through a process of destruction and creation. This process is emblematic of death and rebirth, which is now a main focus in my practice.
