About The Artwork
The big goat is part of the series of Sorcery destined for the despacho (studio) of Alameda, his loyal patrons. The work, completed in 1798 presents a demonic figurative code that was not the result of Goya's visionary impetus, but was very fashionable among the intellectuals of the time. Today the work is exhibited in Madrid, in the Lázaro Galdiano Museum. The work depicts a goat with oak twigs intertwined between its horns and flaming eyes, a clear diabolical symbol, which officiates a witches rite.
