"Paul Volker's witty and beautiful paintings hover seductively between book illustration, outsider art and conceptual painting. His cartoons feign at nativity and legereté but behind the curtain are darker tales and a wonderfully precise control of paint." --BBC Art Documentary Film Maker, Ben Lewis _________________________________ There is always a kind of playfulness in the art of Paul Volker. His style is unique, regardless of whether the work is abstract or narrative, possessing a quality which makes his compositions something beyond mere decoration, beyond the superficial. His paintings are meant to be studied, discussed, perhaps even watched. It has been said that without gimmicks or pretense, and without being too serious, they pose more riddles than they answer. This may be why the black-framed paintings signed, "P.Volker" are favored by hundreds of collectors around the world. In the secondary market, earlier Volker paintings are often priced as much as five times their original selling price, with their investment value being supported by thirty years of output totaling more than 3,000 original paintings (the works offered here are all new works; a saatchionline exclusive). Volker is prolific, yet each work is as unique as his general approach to painting. He never paints on canvas, preferring plywood or "invented" mixed-media surfaces, which may have uneven texture. His paintings are not merely pictures of things, but are things in themselves, (the way a postacrd is a postcard-obect, not merely the picture on it). For this reason, his works are meant to hang without frames. and the "visual feel of the paint" on the surface is part of the overall work itself. Volker's career in fine art followed early success as a cartoonist and illustrator, and this is evident in his most well-known painting series titled,"Return Of The Wild Beasts" (a clever nod to the Fauves), a project during the late 1990's comprised of 1,000 unique paintings of cartoon-styled animals posed with random objects. Volker shifted to fine art in the early 1980's during a mural commission. www.volkerworld.com || Read A Bunch
