Elements of an Emerald Wood Painting

Working from direct observation, I gather visual information from nature using a sketchbook or camera. Many of my paintings begin en plein air, allowing me to immerse myself in the landscape before completing the work in my studio. I paint expressively in acrylics or oils, using a palette knife and various mark-making techniques to build up rich layers. Each piece evolves gradually, reaching its natural conclusion through an intuitive, organic process. The results lie somewhere between abstraction and realism. Painting is my personal response to the landscape around me. The experience of being in the place is as vital to my process as drawing itself. I aim to capture the spirit of the land—its stillness, its wildness, and that quiet sense of tranquillity that comes from deep connection to the natural world. I’m especially moved by dramatic light playing across rugged terrain, shifting skies, and the ever-changing sea. These moments inspire me to express nature in bold, vivid colours. Nothing gives me more joy than when someone connects with my work and tells me it brings them happiness. I exhibit widely, and my paintings are held in private collections across the UK, America, Asia, and Europe. I am represented by several galleries throughout the UK.
