Geboren am 03.03.1940 in Eslohe / Sauerland.
Nach Absolvierung der Schulzeit ( bis 1960 ) Ausbildung zum Hotelkaufmann (bis 1968). Nach Aufenthalten in der Schweiz, Österreich, Frankreich (Kontakte zu Salvador Dali, B. Buffet und anderen namhaften Künstlern) und Tunesien war Walter Franzen 33 Jahre lang selbständiger Hotelier in Rottach-Egern am Tegernsee.
Ende der 70er Jahre wendet er sich der Malerei zu, und zwar die ersten Jahre ausschließlich der Aquarellmalerei, anfangs noch gegenständlich, dann immer abstrakter werdend. Nach einer ca. 5 jährigen Auszeit lernt er 2010 den Künstler und Dozenten Dr. Peter Mairinger kennen und malt seitdem nur noch abstrakt in Acryl und in diversen Mischtechniken. Er liebt es, mit den verschiedensten Materialien zu experimentieren und Neues auszuprobieren. Seine vor allem großformatigen Arbeiten sind meist sparsam, vielschichtig und in begrenzter Palette angelegt.
Er besuchte verschiedene Kurse und Workshops bei namhaften Künstlern und Dozenten in Deutschland und in der Schweiz (Simon Dietrich, Oskar Koller u.a.). Seit 2010 ist er ständiger Gast bei den internationalen Malerwochen in Hollersbach unter der Leitung von Dr. Peter Mairinger.
Walter Franzen lebt und arbeitet in Kreuth am Tegernsee.
