What inspired this work was a particular verse of a poem which I found in one of my journals. Unfortunately, I don't remember which poem it was or the author, and I don't remember why I wrote it down. When I found it I spent a few moments pondering deeply about being in that moment, and I will share this now in order to fully reveal the inspiration for this particular artwork: "The night wears on. Black shadows throng apace, The wood is still. The moon grows wan and old" Being in the woods on a moonlit night is a beautiful thing, but when the moon disappears into the clouds the fear of being alone in the dark forest freezes the serenity with fear of uncertainty. At that very moment, I pray for the light. I hope my viewers will feel the same when they start to meditate on this painting. After using the palette knife and flat brushes, I used the dimensional acrylic paint with the nozzle to get the line artwork onto the canvas. In doing so, I created the subject matter for this artwork, which is an abstract depiction of a moonlit forest, and I chose this subject matter for this work in order to portray the scene described in the given verses of the poem. I also used a sponge to get certain textures onto the canvas, and I used Liquitex heavy gesso along with acrylic colors to get the other textures and visual effects of this work. So, I chose acrylic and heavy gesso mediums for this work because I felt they were well-suited for achieving the particular style which I desired in this artwork. Also, I chose this particular style for this work, because I felt that it was the most effective at evoking the feelings and thoughts I wanted the viewers to experience.

I was born and raised in Sri Lanka. I currently live in Canada. I was the owner/designer of Eco-gallery for 10 years (1999-2009) in Sri Lanka. The Eco-gallery business gained local and international renown; it was well-recognized by the Sri Lankan Export Development Board and was promoted for various trade exhibitions internationally through the National Airline “Air Lanka”. In 2009, I left the Eco-gallery business and came to Canada. I have started my own YouTube channel called “Jubilant Arts”, where I demonstrate abstract art techniques with acrylic colors. I also have another YouTube channel “Jubilant Arts Tutorials” to promote fabric painting to my Sri Lankan audience in my native language, Sinhala. My mother has been a major artistic influence for me. She was a highly creative, persevering, and spiritual person, who taught me from my childhood to see beauty in nature and in every person. She always motivated me to look for opportunities to make a difference in the world. As a result of my mother’s influence, I became a caring human being with a keen eye noticing the beauty in every moment, in every place, in every thing, and in every person. Oil on canvas is my medium of choice when it comes to abstract paintings during my study period in university. When I started Eco-gallery, I created hand-painted fabrics with raw, organic cotton fabrics. All my designs were created using acrylic colors and Indian fabric paint. This was a revolution in the interior designing industry and the hotel industry. In Canada, I am currently doing abstract paintings with oil and acrylic colors.
