Emergence (Painting Two) Painting

Emergence (Painting One & Two) comprised of two paintings this installation derived from a circular displacement of painting, sculpture, photography and print, the compositions, colours, tone and textures are sourced from previous studio works which have been repetitively re-purposed and manipulated. Through acts of precision and intuition, the paintings shifts in shadow and coarse surfaces to iridescent transparencies in multiple layers of erasion and over-painting. The use of irregular shaped canvases forms relationships between the support of the walls, the floor and how each of its edges meet; the precariousness of balance, order and chance. Both paintings allow symmetry in their 45 degree angle which meets either side of the wall, but rather than dissolving their shaped boundaries, they mutually engage with the architectural space as acting supports. This plays on the transitioning of the grey area between painting, sculpture and installation and influencing geometric architectural design and modernist abstract painting. Refracting light from natural sources, it forms dialogues with surface space and reflective glass, with a slight sense of trickery, encouraging viewer of different perspective (behind/ underneath and around the canvas). The work takes reference to light, volume and architectural depiction, although the work continues to fight against any reduction in complexity in its use of abstraction.
