ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This painting is part of a larger series which I made from early to mid 2000's. I was interested in mediated images through television, national symbols and flags. My research was revolving around formal structures of TV images. As a metaphor I used this color bars as a hidden structure within the landscape and our relation with reality. I created these pieces to insinuate a correlation between displays of political power and repression and abstract tranquil paintings devoid of political signification.

Carlos Lérias was born in Lisbon, Portugal and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He studied at University of Lisbon’s Fine Arts School, Universität der Künste in Berlin. In 2009 he moved to New York to study at the School of Visual Arts’ graduate program in Photography, Video and Related Media. His work focuses on the ontological nature of image and its fleeting relation with a bodily presence.
