Seventh painting in the Melancholy series, The Sleep of Endymion takes up the myth of Selene and Endymion. Selene, goddess of the moon, falls in love with the shepherd Endymion. To preserve the beauty of the young mortal, she gets Zeus to plunge him into eternal sleep. Endymion's Sleep has been treated by many artists since antiquity, in painting and sculpture. The best-known version is certainly that painted in 1790 by Anne-Louis Girodet. Nicolas Maureau gives a version that is both Baroque and refined. Endymion's silver shorts evoke the moon, the symbol of chimerical and vain dreams.
