ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This small painting is completed in oil paint on a custom-cut acrylic panel with fluorescent magenta backing. It will glow on your wall! While Rigdon was in London this Summer, she found the Enkomi site at The British Museum, which was excavated from 1894-1896 in the Northern Territory on the island of Cyprus. The archeologists unearthed many ancient rarities including gold mouth diadems and rude ceramics. Rigdon was moved to see so many objects in one place from her childhood nation, such pieces are almost inaccessible in the US and made her feel close and proud of Cyprus. Using the digitized records and images taken while in London, Rigdon has illustrated and recreated the site objects in ceramics, watercolor, and with oil on custom-cut acrylic panels in a style best described as: Archeology meets Pop Art!

Named The Other Art Fair - Dallas "Fair Director's Pick" Spring 2021. Cat Rigdon (b. 1990) is a painter and fiber artist based in Dallas, Texas. She grew up on the island of Cyprus, the island's strong folk art and naturalism culture is reflected in Rigdon’s work. She graduated from Texas State University in 2014 and moved to Dallas as a Decorative Arts Junior Specialist and Cataloger for Heritage Auctions. She left the auction house after a serious head injury to pursue a studio based lifestyle. Her obsessively repetitive works deal with her continuous recovery from the brain injury, the mythology of growing up on the island of Cyprus, and artifacts from being an auction catalogers. She currently is a resident at the Cedars Union and has previously been awarded the Clare DeGolyer grant though the Dallas Museum of Art.
