About The Artwork

In Buddhism, equanimity is one of the four sublime attitudes and is considered: Neither a thought nor an emotion, it is rather the steady conscious realization of reality's transience. It is the ground for wisdom and freedom and the protector of compassion and love. “Equanimity” is a minimal abstract painting which comprises a variety of colors including white, gold, and delicate black lines. To create its overall vibrating field, the artist uses a technique akin to mandala sand painting. She dips a small fan brush into paint and then taps it against a stick to create delicate dots and splatters. For hours, she taps until the canvas is covered with layers of lines and flecks. The resulting image is a homogenous field – an energized labyrinth of patterns, lines, and vibrations. In this painting, she uses a dark border to contain the moving field of lines and marks. From a distance the image appears orderly and unified; yet up close, all one sees is a chaotic pattern of lines and particles moving in every direction. The painting expresses the unified field of molecular reality which when experienced brings a sense of peace and equanimity. Thompson’s aim is to create an image which resonates with the viewer’s reality and bring awareness to that movement. The work can be hung both vertically or horizontally and is ready to hang. It is signed on the back.

“What I dream of is an art of balance, purity and serenity devoid of troubling or depressing subject matter, a soothing calming influence on the mind rather like a good armchair which provides relaxation from physical fatigue.” - - Henri Matisse. Inspired by Matisse’s artistic quest to uplift and energise the viewer, I strive to create light and colour filled paintings that illuminate, soothe and vitalise the human spirit. Perhaps my appreciation for abstraction comes from living in Canada surrounded by mountains, lakes, sky and forests. Nature continually presents me with soothing colours, exciting designs, delightful patterns, intriguing patinas and infinite space. Nature presents light, dark, shadows and movement which evoke emotions of mystery, wonder and love. My goal as a painter is to use nature’s abstract elements like colour and space to capture a particular feeling, a feeling of unity, passion or peacefulness. I strive to create painterly abstractions that mysteriously resonate with my deeper self and hopefully with the soul of the viewer. I believe art is a way to communicate one soul to another.
