Sixth painting in the Melancholy series, Et In Arcadia Ego takes up the legend of the Shepherds of Arcadia, a pastoral scene that Nicolas Poussin treated twice. Shepherds living in the wonderful land of Arcadia discover in the countryside a tomb bearing the inscription "Et in Arcadia Ego" (I also exist in Arcadia), thus realizing that they are mortal. Nicolas Maureau gives a sober version, with inner awareness.
