About The Artwork

Eva Angelica Marie is a triptych, 3 separate paintings. Oil paints on gesso. All painted wood panels are birch, and the outer finished frame is Aspen, painted solid black. The frame is sunken to the same level as the painting so that no painted surface is hidden. Please see the various closeup pictures. Total outer size is 31 in. x 52 in. This work marks a new era for me. Since 2014 when I started painting I believe I had this somewhere in mind, but it took a long period of development to get to this point. I’m very excited to introduce a new phase of work for me, as well as a new emphasis on how framing integrates into the artwork itself. This work represents the true integration of my inner faith with my art, and a departure for me from a more commercialized self where I do not look on my art as a “product”, but as an EXTENSION of my inspiration. This is a triptych, a “three-panel” work that is close to the traditional pieces originally designed for alter pieces, normally having hinges for the sides to fold inward. They made for a traveling piece that were often used by priests to deliver services to church members in remote places, especially the communion. They are also reflective often of trinitarian belief, and most often feature a crucifixion scene. The modern versions of triptychs however come in many different configurations/sizes, and various contents. Mine in particular, for my very first triptych, I thought it appropriate to contain not just 3 separate paintings, but 3 layers, and 3 styles as well. The background layer over all is a scene of apocalypse, the end of man, and in an impressionist style. The middle layer is found in both of the side paintings, and is illustrative. The front layer is obviously in the center and in a realist style. The entirety of the piece is one of innocence, purity, and protected separation from death, sin, and destruction. Eva Angelica Marie represents all that is good in mankind, and her name is a mixture of the first woman, an angelic figure, and Mary, the mother of God. She carries forth an Olive branch in her hand.
