I am very fond of this view of the beach looking out to an Island. We went walking here one evening, it had been raining heavily and the clouds were just clearing. The winds were bracing and the skies turbulent, I always feel inspired by the coast, the blues of the ocean, white surf and windswept sky. There were two people standing close to the shore line looking out to sea and in the evening light they were silhouetted against the back drop of the ocean. Painted in mixed media on deep edged canvas "Evening Light" is an original work of art and one of a kind. I begin with observation of the place making notes and taking photographs to work from in the studio. I painted some base layers with a brush and used some impasto techniques in layers applied with a palette knife for the foreground, then used brushes to apply glazes and scumble creating a contemporary painting. Working expressively in acrylics or oils, with a palette knife and other mark making techniques, she works layer upon layer until the painting reaches a natural conclusion forming paintings that lie somewhere between abstraction and realism. “Painting is a response to the beautiful landscape around me, the experience of being in the place is as much an important part of the process as drawing. I attempt to capture the spirit of the land and that quiet sense of tranquillity that coexists with a closeness to the natural world. I am moved by dramatic light sweeping over the rugged elements chased by clouds and the timeless changing sea when visiting the coast.
