"Everyday People" Painting

Chelsea Rae Klein’s work investigates the role familial histories, memory and trauma have on the intergenerational self. Her work interrogates the hold that trauma and fear take on the body and how cellular memory projects trauma forward. Weaving oral histories, archival footage, painting, shadow projections, sculpture and installation the artist traces invisible histories to reform an identity landscape largely inhabited but widely unseen. Questioning dominant social and political constructs, Klein redirects images, ephemera and sound to assert individual and collective memory, spinning a new history that reveals denied voicing and counters static and normative social identity constructs as a method to uproot cycles of harm and aggregate possibilities for healing.
