About The Artwork

This is the second painting from the series "understanding the evolution of classical music in 18th and 19th century South India. The painting depicts an everyday scene of a typical south Indian Brahmin household where a few people belonging to the priestly class (Brahmins) are enjoying an informal musical recital. The painting is not a very detailed one, as I have employed impressionistic approach to paint it .The background has paintings of Lord Shiva and Durga - two very prominent deities of Indian culture. The lord Shiva painting on the wall depicts a scene where King Bhageeratha requests Shiva to grant river Ganga to flow on earth. As previously Ganga, a sacred river flowed only in the heavens. It marks the story of how Ganga started flowing in India. Shiva is also seen with Nandi (his Bull attendant) and is standing on the rouge elephant's skin, which he had previously killed.
