ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Expression reduces the colour palette to one of base, earth tones and builds a history of layers and marks over time. Influenced by "wabi-sabi" - the acceptance of transience and imperfection. Expression is appreciating beauty that is imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete in is a concept derived from the Buddhist teaching of the three marks of existence - impermanence, suffering and emptiness or absence of self-nature. Expression embraces asymmetry, roughness, simplicity, economy, austerity, modesty, intimacy, and the appreciates both natural objects and the forces of nature.

Ash Smith

Ash Smith

United Kingdom

Art has always played a big part in Ash's life, for as long as he can remember he has been fascinated by making marks (on anything, with anything!). Through his education he studied fine art, graphic design, art history and photography and has utilised all of them in his creative practice. In recent years photography has been his main creative outlet, developing a reputation as a street photographer whose style is heavily influenced by art in terms of colour control and composition - seeking out graphic lines and shapes and shadows in order the explore the human relationship with the environment. Now, with areturn to painting, Ash is exploring the environment in a different way - seeking structure through line and shape, but also embracing the chaos and dynamism that comes with being a human in that environment. His latest collection refines these ideas further, inspired by a love of colour and the psychology of colour, exploring how the relationships between colours make us think, feel and therefore behave. His paintings are balancing acts of colour, form and line, surface and space, abstraction and figurativeness, image and text. Individual areas of colour are put down with strong paint marks and then worked over and over. A variety of more or less defined objects keep being woven into the painterly process.
