Modern Zen calligraphy brushed on Xuan rice paper. This calligraphy shows the Heart Sutra line – Form Is Emptiness, Emptiness is Form– brushed in an expressive, straightforward Zen style. The calligraphy is a fusion of East and West ideographics. On the left stands the Chinese/Japanese character 空, Emptiness, and on the right stands 色, Form. Both characters are brushed in a bold cursive style. Between them stands the equal sign =, hence the meaning: 空 Emptiness = 色 Form The calligraphy can be read both ways, from right to left, or from left to right. Form is exactly emptiness Emptiness is exactly form. The red seal reads : Directly pointing to the human mind– the core principle of Great Master Bodhidharma's teaching. As my signature I introduce one of the oldest art expressions of humans: the print of a hand. The original calligraphy is not stretched yet. I don't know if you are familiar with rice paper, but when you brush on it, it absorbs the ink and it wrinkles. Therefore the artwork needs to be mounted, which means it is stretched and flattened to take the wrinkles away. Several Chinese and Japanese mounting services in the USA offer art mounting services on the internet. They will be happy to assist you with the mounting. You could also ask your local framer.

My artwork comprises Zen calligraphy, watercolor and ink paintings, and abstract calligraphies. My mediums are ink, watercolors and natural pigments on rice paper, mainly Xuan paper. I wield the Chinese and Japanese brush, preferably the flexible sheep's hair brush. Many of my Zen calligraphies express the Emptiness teaching from the Heart Sutra, which has been the original inspiration for my Japanese calligraphy artwork. Other calligraphies focus on the teachings of the Diamond Sutra, Platform Sutra, or depict Zen koan, Zen poetry or single kanji. In my watercolors and ink paintings I strive for a pictorial synthesis of the subject, in the spirit of Japanese ink painting, using bold washes and vivid brush strokes.
