About The Artwork

This painting is titled - 'Family Portrait' It is based upon Jan Van Eyck's famous painting called- 'The Arnolfini Portrait'. For many years it was agreed that the woman in the original was pregnant. However, it is now understood she was merely holding up her dress! In my version I have assumed she was pregnant and now holds the offspring, only in my painting as the figures are made of wood-its an acorn! Further links to the original include a dog bowl as a nod to the original having a dog. The lettering surrounding the mirror is based upon 17c Dutch alphabet and it simply says- 'Ian was here'. As the original painting has a script under the mirror which states -'Jan Van Eyck was here...
