ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The American Abstract Expressionism inspired this artwork. I am a fond of this era and I wanted to practice some similar style. At some point I wanted to continue the painting but I have realised this is ready, and all what I had wished for.

Frenyó Júlia - Artist statement Courage and I always went hand in hand since I was a kid. On October 22, 2021, around 5 pm, I walked into the Ludwig Museum with one of my works of art in my hand and placed it in the exhibition space, then affixed a note to the wall, indicating the artist's name, size, technique and year in Hungarian and English. My guerrilla work was on display on the first floor of the Ludwig Museum for 4 days at the Methaphysical Passage Through a Zebra - Stories about Hunting and Nature- exhibition. Was I excited to revolt against the official canonical classification and exhibit myself in an alternative way in the largest contemporary art space in Budapest and Hungary? Of course! But that's what art is about: the ongoing crossing of borders. Just like life is about it. Over and over again, surpass ourselves. Action! Reaction! I also see this kind of courage in my paintings, only in a 2D form. I’m not afraid of colours and sensitive or taboo subjects. I like death and I like life. I speak out for sexuality; I speak out for the importance of the darkness and the light. In my art, I created a new world, a new one from the existing one. I like to paint and create in different ways. Sometimes figurative, sometimes abstract, sometimes funny or blasphemous, but in a deeper sense, each can be considered very religious in some way. The style of figurative painting is or may be similar to the style of Neue Sachlichkeit or New Objectivity, but it is not necessarily my inspiration. My main inspiration is my inner world, but I am influenced by different styles, places, artists and eras. My style is basically always changing, even though constant traits can be discovered. But it is certain that the early years are about this path-finding, and I think a personality, an artist, and life in general have such a nature: it always changes, it renews again and again. A few years ago, my abstract paintings were mostly expressive paintings. I looked up at Wols a lot. A few years later, I painted the abstract paintings in a more meditative way, making lines and stripes, and that’s when I looked up to Bridget Riley. When I did actionism and body art, the Viennese Actionism were my main teachers. I think one of the, if not the most important things in painting is the use of colours and unrepeatable uniqueness. I also make objects called assamblages. I also do embroidery, write poems and create collages.
