ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Created following my Landscape Artist of the Year prize trip to Macedonia, which explored the World War One front in Salonika. This particular view was from Rocky Peak, the site of a major ally defeat in 1916. I was inspired by Goya's painting of a man overlooking a foggy view as the battle in question took place on a foggy, winter morning.

Over time I have noticed that regardless of imagery, my work naturally holds feelings of melancholy, pathos, or a dreamy state. There is a sense of something ending or softening, a dying light, the end of a summers day or something slipping out of reach. I have an interest in finding imagery through a random, sometimes destructive process. I search for hints and suggestions which emerge through this often playful technique.
