ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The painting "For Breathing" transforms spiritual symbols into an apocalyptic reality. The white dove, traditionally a symbol of peace and hope, is portrayed as the only creature capable of sustaining life, though it can only survive with the aid of a gas mask. Here, the dove symbolizes not only peace and hope but also the immense effort required to preserve life in this harsh, dystopian landscape. It becomes a metaphor for the strength and unity needed to carry on amidst adversity. The title "For Breathing" emphasizes that maintaining peace and coexistence is neither an easy nor natural process. It demands tremendous energy and effort from each individual. The people in the painting, who offer the dove their light — symbolizing their spirit or inner essence — seem to be trying to keep this symbol alive, allowing it to continue breathing. The filtration canister attached to the dove’s chest is a visual representation of the effort required to sustain this light and hope, which in turn becomes vital for collective harmony and peace. In this work, the dove, as the symbol of hope and peace, is closely tied to the people who feed it with their inner light, almost as if they are nurturing it with their very souls to ensure its survival in a challenging world.

My name is Michael Makharadze. I was born in July 12, 1994. In 2012 graduated from St. Tbel Abuserisdze Gymnasium. In 2012-2018 I studied philosophy at Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University. "I create art that serves as a bridge between the material and symbolic worlds. Each piece is a conceptual reflection of this journey. I strive to capture and make visible the threads that connect us to one another." The main theme of my work is humanity and everything related to it. Humanity is the highest value; it gives meaning and significance to existence. In my art, I explore the world through symbols, which reveal an inexhaustible space of content and emotions. Each painting carries its own message, yet they are united by the process of searching for truth, interacting with the essence of things, and contemplating the significance of human existence. The perception of the world through the eyes of a finite observer, against the backdrop of cosmic infinity, and the mythological aestheticization of the unknown are present in almost every piece. Particular attention is given to the problem of absurdity and existence, often connected with existential philosophy. The figures depicted in the works are frequently hyperbolized or exaggerated. Compositionally, they are arranged as if we are observing a monumental scene frozen in time and space. The imagined world is unified, representing a whole, and creating a sense of parallel reality, with each painting intertwined with symbolic imagery. Depending on the context, the paintings create their own meaning through associations, weaving together individual stories that are also connected to other works.
