This painting is inspired by drawing from life, particularly the figure within a chaotic environment. The colours are applied with thick oil paint, mixed on the actual canvas, to allow the image to change quickly in response to the light.

I create paintings which are a visual response to my past and present environment. Referencing tactile landscapes with paint, developing spatial images of Lanarkshire, Cheshire and Spain. These places resonate with me and direct my style of painting, layering and dripping vibrant and murky oil paints and thinning liquids. Drawing, glimpsing and remembering sums up my creative process as does allowing shapes and potential narratives to form as the painting happens. I love German Neo Expressionist painting and found my way as a painter at mid cheshire school of art and edinburgh college of art (1992-1995). Living in Spain in 1994, I was able to see Abstract Expressionist paintings in their full glory, in various exhibitions in Europe at that time as well as regular visits to the Prado Museum (particularly Velazqueth and Goya), Reina Sofia Museum and of course Fundacio Tapies. Being alongside great painting has inspired bold free approach to painting.
