Fragments No 9; this is the seventh of the fragments series and it refers to the manner in which the work was produced. The work is a mediation of a visit to the Lake District in England famed for its dramatic scenery. The piece was developed as response to this visit, however no drawings were made during the visit and the pieces were formed through my recall of colours and shapes seen. The act of painting is a response to this, colours are selected and gestures are made and paint is applied to board. Through a series of interventions a painting is slowly revealed.

Paul has a reflective approach to practice; this is often provoked by looking at other artists and their work and considering how they developed their artistic enquiry. Artists have always been important to his work in seeing the possibilities of painting. This has been explored in greater depth in his Homage series, offering a point of reference, departure, and disruption for artistic enquiry. His work also explores the physical act of painting, anchored in the moment and the immediacy of the gesture. Working on either wood or paper, the material qualities of these are inherent to Paul’s practice and these are fully acknowledged and honoured through the working process. Working automatically marks are applied and then considered. An intervention is then made to keep or remove the marks, shapes and compositions are explored resulting in a creative enquiry that often spans several pieces of work. The compositions unfold over time through this process of application and excavation, in a manner that could be described as an intuitive; a dialectical conversation mediated by paint. Paul is also writes about art, culture and inclusion and has recently written a book on the subject to be published by Routledge in the Spring and is also co-author of the Cultural Inclusion Manifesto.
