About The Artwork

Acrylic painting on linen canvas with aluminium and wood frame. I have given the name of the painting a lot of thought. Initially I called it "Landscaping". However this name felt short in covering the full charge of the painting. Another name I thought about was "Shine" which has a applicable double meaning in the dutch language. Finally, I chose the name "True Colors". What you see seem to be the "true colors" of the canvas but the question is whether they truly are the true colors? This painting is an expression of the physical and sometimes emotional situation in which we can find ourselves. The lines, little blocks and linear composition is a reflection of how our government governs over us with many laws, restrictions and structures. Even though this can give a beautiful picture on the outside we wonder how beautiful and colorful those layers are that are buried deep underneath these layers of control. How is it with our freedom? Can we really be ourselves? Are we happy with this reflection or do we desire colors that are more beautiful and richer? Also on a more personal level we can ask ourselves whether we are truly being ourselves? How real are we? Are we showing our real identity? Do we live a free life? Does our mirror reflect an hypocritical image that looks okay on the outside while we cover our true colors and identity with a mask ? A mask that might be controlling our lives and keeps us captivated?
