Freedom to Choose Painting

The inspiration for this piece was to further my study of the asian aesthetic. I enjoy mixing asian races which is often viewed as anti-culture/provocative in asian cultures. This is specifically an expression about human rights issues, especially in China where anti LBGTQ, immigration and woman's rights are affected. Having a strong woman who is of mixed race, androgynous and not fitting the preferred profile is what I wanted. The use of strong Chinese calligraphy repeating the statement "Freedom to Choose" makes for a powerful piece. Self expression in China is more and more becoming a challenge and deemed illegal. I intentionally painted the lettering in a street style, aggressive, rough manner to further the expression.
