ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The works from the transCerebral series are a sardonic comment on the ambiguous status of the human brain in our society. Far from being the simple instrument of logical deduction we believe it to be, it often acts as undercover agent of our primal instincts, deviously substituting rationality by rationalization. The irony of these pieces – sculpture, paintings, drawings and collages - adds a satirical counterpoint to the abstarct KRYPTA work. (from Tijs Ulevel, “Cerveaulant” 2009) « French Philosophy » is a persiflage on the so-called deconstructivist (or relativist, or postmodern) philosophy invented by French intellectuals like Foucault, Derrida ou Lancan. The image of the brain discomposing itself and flying away to mystical unfathomabme « heights » is symbolical of their arrgance, intellectual corruption, sloppy thinking and systematical (mis)use of pseudo scientific data that has ridiculed the French intelligentsia for half a century and has been the forerunner of the actual corruption in other fields like sociologie, justice, politics and economie in France.

Born 1950 in Rotterdam NL. Of french-swiss nationality. Lives and works in the South of France. Essentially an abstract painter and sculptor, whose work is mainly to be found in arte povera and minimal art collections, the artists second area of interest is satirical drawing and collage in a realistic or surrealistic style. ++++++++TRANS'CEREBRAL++++++++The works of the transCerebral series are à critical and satirical reflexion on the ambiguous role of the brain in our society. Far from being the simple instrument of rationality it is supposed to be, our brain often acts as undercover agent at the service of our most sordid instincts, sneakily substituting rationality by rationalisation. Metaphor of the schizophrenic condition of human intelligence, these images denounce the alarming discrepancy between our cognitive intelligence and our incapacity to transfer this knowledge into our social life. On the one hand, we are able to fly to Mars, to perform complex medical operations and to construct skyscrapers, bridges and any amount of lethal weapons. On the other hand, we are unable to master even our most basic instincts, and we seem to be wholly incapable to put our technical intelligence to intelligent, e.g. constructive use. This disparity may well prove the main difficulty in the merging of biological and artificial intelligence. Given the nano-mechanical means, it will doubtlessly be possible to boost our cognitive intelligence. But this operation might at the same time increase the gulf between technical and what we may call evolutionary intelligence - the capacity to use our trained brains to better the conditions of life on our planet - and leave us with even more highly knowledgeable and particularly destructive lunatics.
