Love is supposed to be good, because it's a great source of pleasure, a reason to live, and because it brings us a lot of happiness. But it's not an automatic source of comfort. We are taught not to trust it. It's supposed to be good, but when it doesn't work out, we are disappointed. We expect it to give us some comfort, but not to provide it all at once. We expect a steady flow of love, not a sudden burst of it. The love we are supposed to have for a partner is not so much a relationship in the conventional sense, but a continuous flow of love. The flow of love needs to be continuous, and there is a natural cycle at work: we love when we are not in love, and we stop loving when we are in love. We are meant to have a regular flow of love, not just a burst of it.
