ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This is one of my favorite, recent preliminary works on panel. I made it with mixed media and reclaimed vintage papers referencing classic architecture from all over the world. It is an image that I will definitely scale up a time or two. Currently I am on the lookout for just the right paper and fabrics to work into the background. It is always hard to consider a more developed work when the study is one you love, don't you think? I have an ongoing discussion with myself about whether I should continue to explore an idea or accept that it has reached a point of success early on. How do you use studies and early works to inform your future creations?

Toby Penney is a southern artist working in paint, photography, printmaking & multiple sculpture media. Penney creates work accepting, even glorifying simple objects & fleeting moments. She is also the founder of Roaming Studio, offering art classes, workshops, & artist residencies. Toby enjoys developing relationships with other creative people. She exhibits internationally and with several galleries in the U.S.. Recent exhibitions include PALIMPSEST at Penny Contemporary in Tasmania & BODIES at Mulbury Gallery in Melbourne, Australia. EVOLUTION OF MEMORY is her solo exhbit, currently on view at Tennessee Wesleyan University. Toby has also been a two time recipient of the Denis Diderot AIR Grant with corresponding fellowships to Chateau Orquevaux Artist Residency. Her work has been on the cover of Professional Artist Magazine and Hellbent Magazine and has been included in numerious other publications.
