Ghost Motel Painting

Ghosted sign refers to a painted sign that has partially faded and worn off. This sign was a particularly interesting find. Closer to rural than urban, it's a sign way past it's early days as it has had the neon removed and holes for the wiring covered. The painted letters have had several versions and some of the early lines can faintly be seen. I'm fascinated by old signage, which is a spin off of my earlier urban landscape work. The disappearing mid-century sign is unique because the owners have either updated and restored, modernized, ignored and given over to the weather, or abandoned them. My hope is that the collector would appreciate the patina left on an old relic such as this and be engaged with the slight humor of the odd shapes that the mid-century designers of neon and lighted signs created, this one being the shape of a pineapple. This painting is more painterly than most of my work, I thought that Gouache, having a very chalky look lent itself well to the fading paint. The work has a deckle edge on two sides and soft cut on two sides, therefore it could be floated in a mat to frame.
