About The Artwork

This thesis will illustrate the state of fear and nervousness towards self-identity in the contemporary society based on the writer's piece. It will expand into a universal self-portrayal through figuratively re-interpreting the defense mechanism of that fear. Through countless experience along with feelings, humans grow and develop a sense of identity within the society. The piece tries to interpret the 'the feeling of fear', one of many feelings developed during human's growth in the society. It portrays nervousness towards the unfamiliarity that people experience when they come of age and towards loneliness felt within the society. regardless of psychological maturity, roles as an adult are given when people reach their 19th birthday. It is a role that is bestowed to all who have matured physically and reach a certain age. However, the given adult roles are the ones that they imagined during the younger years. Adults, from children's point of view, seemed sturdy and capable of accomplishing everything. People feel they have grown up too soon with inadequate preparations considering the child in the past is exactly the current self without much difference. the piece shows both anxiety towards psychological immaturity and inner emotions that is felt by the persona of the 'girl'. the girl is self-portrayal of consolation to that fear, or a sympathy towards lonely and nervous people. The writer feels that the young innocent years of childhood, without being influenced by the outside world, is closer to ourselves. the adulthood is the reality and the 'girl' reflects the ideal past and the future. This piece tries to console the anxiety that is felt in the reality, through the ideal girlhood that existed in the past or the illustration of a girl in pursuit of the ideals. It also tries to extract the inner fear through the piece's characters and communicate those feelings. When feelings of fear and anxiety grows, facial expression ceases to exist. Not used to expressing her feelings, the 'girl' tries to accomplish that by her eyes inside her hidden face and communicate her portrayal of fear and anxiety by lingering her eyesight. Looking straight ahead, she attempts to provide comfort by sharing her feelings and staring. By examining the writer's own piece and the characteristics of self-portraits, and analyzing the similarities between the works of Frida Kahlo. the writer attempts to deduct the process in which those similarities are transformed into a defense mechanism and symbolic human figure. Return to the past in order to overcome the present fear and ideals of the future are part of a defense mechanism against fear. Imaginary objects such as flower buds, deer's torso, horns and broad-billed roller are created by the 'girl' who pursues ideals and strivers to get out of the reality. The objects, therefore, symbolizes defense mechanism and consolation of the present. Adult represents the present and the 'girl' ideals. She tries to console her fear that she feels in the reality by portraying her ideals through the 'girlhood'. The self-portrayal that expresses inner feelings by reflecting ego into the 'girl' can be that of anyone. Thus, the 'girl' is self-reflection of those who feel anxious in the contemporary society. It is a universal portrayal, developing from a personal one. People are consoled by sympathizing with others. The writer attempt to send her consolation to the loss of self-ego of the contemporaries and psychological anxiety.
