I am an artist working in the technique of suminagashi — the ancient Japanese art of marbling ink on water. In my practice, I seek to modernize this tradition, preserving its meditative essence while reinterpreting its visual language through a contemporary lens. Departing from classical methods, I use handmade cotton paper of greater weight and texture than is traditionally employed in suminagashi. This material allows for more nuanced, layered interactions between ink and water, giving each composition a heightened sense of depth and presence. I work with a proprietary ink formula developed through personal experimentation. Like the marblers of the pre-18th century, I choose not to disclose its composition — not out of mystique, but as an act of reverence for the craft and its process. Each piece is created in an auditory context: I work exclusively while listening to ambient music, allowing sound to shape the rhythm, density, and emotional tone of the image. This is not a literal illustration of sound, but a form of sublimation — where inner and acoustic experience finds expression in the fluid dynamics of ink on water. My practice is an ongoing exploration of the limits of form, silence, time, and perception. Through the interplay of water, ink, and sound, I aim to reveal what often escapes us: the fleeting state of presence. Each work exists as a one-of-a-kind original. I do not produce copies or reproductions — only originals, each capturing a singular and unrepeatable moment of encounter with matter and time. Since the beginning of the war in my home country, Ukraine, I have been living with deep depression. Art has become a way for me to stay present, to preserve balance, and to speak — quietly but persistently — about fragility, presence, and memory Video of the process available upon request.
