About The Artwork

I was inspired to create a trilogy, this is the second one and comes from being alone in a city. I have tried to depict the evening commute in Tokyo, chosen because of it's notoriously busy commute; everyone finishing work and heading somewhere else, being alone while surrounded by humanity. The background colours are from the reflections of the store & hotel lights on the wet road surface. I hope the viewer will create their own story about the figures in the picture. .

I was born in Yorkshire and am currently living in Derbyshire, but have lived in various places including 19 years in the West of Ireland on the Atlantic coast, in Counties Clare, Galway and Mayo. I am inspired by the coast and big skies of these areas. My interests are very diverse: martial arts, dance, equestrian sport and meditation; all of which influence my painting. I am inspired by how we see things, how much information we can take in, in a single moment, which also reflects in my work. While my subject matter and style can be diverse, it helps to keep things fresh. I mostly use acrylics, but also mixed media as I like the subject to dictate the style and materials I use which include crystals and resin. In my use of resin I like to create an appropriate finish for the subject, so it's not necessarily a smooth surface. I paint figuratively, in a contemporary style and also abstract. To sum up, I like to capture a moment in time, whatever the subject, using a bold palette and unusual composition. I was told the following when I asked what they liked about my work... "The originality of the piece. Quality of composition, but mostly the use of colour for me. Also the detail."
