About The Artwork

Walking in our garden on an early, windy evening, I happened upon a sunflower waving in the wind, as she prepared to close her petals to sleep for the night. But a hungry Monarch Butterfly had another intent. It took advantage of petals not completely closed for an opportunity to sample the fine nectar still available, allowing me my own opportunity for a memorable photograph. I set a quick shutter speed and captured a fleeting moment in time. A scene like this one is impossible to capture without a camera. But starting with a still shot, I portrayed the petals flailing in the wind with my brush. I hope the action is conveyed to my viewers and I thank a hungry butterfly for allowing me the time to capture the scene. Although most of my work is architectural, I often take a break from the perspective angles and straight lines to revel in the freedom of painting flowers. Invariably, I attempt to capture a dynamic scene and I favor an abstract background to contrast with an accurately rendered flower, hoping for a three dimensional effect. Watercolors are perfect for my portrayals.

My name is Oscar Rayneri and I was born in Havana, Cuba. I came with my family to the U.S. in 1956. I was proud to become a citizen on the unfortunate date of November 22, 1963, the day that President Kennedy was assassinated. I started drawing when I was very young and began a detective strip when I was nine. I still have every page of it. After graduating from college, I began painting in oils and when I started doing outdoor shows, I switched to the hardest medium of all, watercolors. I have been painting in watercolors ever since.
