Gray City Painting

"Gray City" is a work inspired by the Clean City law, initiated by the city government of São Paulo, Brazil, in 2007. The law allowed the city's walls to be covered in gray paint, silencing urban art which lost several important graffiti pieces in the process. This piece brings forth an act in two parts: -The first is the background, which, after covering the existing art with gray paint, receives a new intervention with the inscription "Art Saves." -The second part is represented by the plastered styrofoam board, simulating a gray wall being built in the foreground to conceal the street culture that insists on not being silenced. It was an art that involved a more immersive creative process, while also being very loose and enjoyable to experience. An art that was conceived step by step, respecting the drying time of the various layers of paint and plaster applied to the styrofoam board. It is a living art that emanates the active voice of art as a means of urban and cultural communication and intervention.
